Webinar: The iPad Invasion: Leveraging SharePoint for Mobile Enterprise Security

Last week, Colligo hosted the webinar “The iPad Invasion: Leveraging SharePoint for Mobile Enterprise Security”:

A recording of the webinar is now available on demand for those that missed it and it can be accessed by clicking on the image above (registration required).

The webinar is very interesting and I highly recommend taking the time to watch it if you are interested in mobile clients to access SharePoint. The webinar highlights security risks that can be brought about through unsecured or unmanaged devices and using free services like Dropbox to share corporate data if a solution isn’t provided by IT:

The webinar opens with an introduction by Barry Jinks, Founder and CEO of Colligo. Barry gives an overview of the history of Colligo and their customers. He then shows some statistics around sales of iPad and how they compare to other devices based on research from Forrester and Gartner. The iPad is expected to lead into 2015:

He then leads into other stats from Ernst & Young around IT support for tablet devices; only 14% of IT departments within organisations officially support tablet devices:

Whilst a lot of departments may not officially support tablet devices, they are being used by staff who bring their own device. The following slide illustrates the challenge this presents:

After highlighting the user requirements and security issues, Barry then explains how Briefcase has been developed to meet these problems head on:

Barry then explains how Colligo products can deliver similar functionality to Dropbox but in a secure and managed way with only a client side software installation:

The webinar then hands over at the 19:12 mark to Matthias  Bandemer who is the Senior Manager, Advisory Services, Ernst & Young. Mattias talks about the security risks that are presented through use of the iPad with SharePoint:

Matthias then highlights how vulnerabilities within the iPad, specifically jailbroken devices, can introduce risks to corporate data:

Matthias then hands over to Trevor Dyck, Director, Product Management, Colligo Networks at the 34:35 mark who covers the product options and features in more detail. Trevor covers the features of Colligo Briefcase and how they have addressed the security issues identified by Ernst & Young.

Trevor covers how Colligo products work to deliver SharePoint within the Enterprise whether it be on tablet, PC, laptop or phone.

I don’t really want to take away from what Trevor presents but this area of the presentation is going to cover similar points to those that I will cover in my review of the products. The key points that Trevor makes though cover the fact that Briefcase is designed from the ground up to be a very secure product:

And that through the use and integration with other Colligo products, specifically Colligo Administrator, the Enterprise SharePoint content on an iPad can be centrally managed/controlled or pushed to the devices. If required, SharePoint content can be wiped from a device if it is lost/stolen or an employee leaves:

The webinar then closes with a Q&A session followed by the chance to enter a competition to win an iPad 3. Yes, I did rewind to confirm that the offering is for an iPad 3 – a product which hasn’t been officially announced by Apple but may at their event March 7th.

If you are interested in SharePoint clients for use on mobile devices like iPad and you’ve stuck with me through the above, I highly recommend you spare the time to watch the webinar in full here:
