Moprise is another SharePoint client application that is produced by Moprise (I’ve previously reviewed Moshare here). There are three versions offered on the Moprise website: Personal, Business and Enterprise.
Unlike other SharePoint clients, this application is targeted towards use with documents only.
This review covers version 2.3 of the Personal edition of the application which is a 1.9MB download as at 11th March. As with other reviews, I’m testing on an iPad running iOS 5.0.1. The Personal edition is meant to be limited to use with 2 SharePoint sites.
The application can be downloaded from the application store here.
Launching the application for the first time, you are prompted to set up a site:
Configuring a site requires you to enter the full URL along with username and password.
Once you have added the site, the application presents you with this view:
After you work out that you must tap “Choose a file” in the top left hand corner to actually get access to your sites, you will see this:
From here, you can either:
- Tap the site you have added to view content
- Tap the blue arrow to bring up site information (URL, username and password)
- Tap edit to delete an existing site (you can’t change order of sites like in other applications)
- Tap the + symbol to add an additional site
- Tap Send Feedback to draft an email
Selecting your site will then present you with a view of the available content:
As mentioned above, this application is aimed purely at use with documents so I am unclear why the interface presents access to form templates, site assets and the site library.
Tapping Shared Documents, you are presented with a view of the content within:
There are no options to filter the view so I would imagine that if working with a large document library it could quickly become frustrating trying to find content.
You can sort the content of the library but options are limited to title and date. I’m assuming that this date is the updated date for the content.
Tapping and dragging the displayed content down prompts the application to poll the site for updated content.
Tapping to select an item within the document library allows you to preview the content:
Once the content has loaded, you get a full screen view whether the device is in portrait or landscape mode. Options along the top of the application are:
- Choose File to favorite the current content, select other content or navigate back through the site
- Tap the book icon to view favorites
- Tap the arrow to print to an AirPrint device
- Tap Edit to open the content in another application
- Tap Share to either email the content or a link to the content
The Moprise website indicates that this client should allow you to “Search within your site for documents and other items” however I could not find any evidence of a search facility within this version of the application.
The application lacks any built-in help or support explaining the application features so I couldn’t turn to this to find the search feature either.
I found that this application also has a significant security issue after deleting the SharePoint sites that had been setup. When adding the Office 365 site back in again, I entered only one character for the username and password to get through validation and was allowed back into the content of the site. I’ve logged this with Moprise.
Whilst I like how Moprise allows a new site to be setup using the credentials of the previously configured site, I also have some concerns around how could be exploited. For me, this area needs some additional thought and potentially application level security so it cannot be exploited if a device falls into the wrong hands.Back to top
