Reviews: Mobile SharePoint Clients Overview

27/02/2012 | By | 10 Replies More

There is an increasingly growing list of options when it comes to working with SharePoint when mobile. I thought I would pull together a list of the various mobile SharePoint clients with a view to preparing reviews of them and settling on the best version for my own use:

Mobile SharePoint Clients

Mobile SharePoint Clients

In the coming week or two I hope to be able to go through all of the applications and provide reviews for each and a summary at the end with a recommendation of the most useful. I will also be looking at a client that will support both on premise SharePoint and Office 365.

I have to admit now that the focus will primarily be on iOS based hardware as that is what I have access to/own. I will attempt to review any Android applications using an emulator and similarly Windows Phone 7 based apps via an emulator too.

I currently use SharePlus but I am very keen to try others to establish the best in terms of mobile productivity.

The list above is not exhaustive and I’ve probably missed an application or too. Please let me know if there are any omissions so I can include.

Update

As I’ve completed a number of reviews and also moved the site to a new layout, I’ve included a slider above to provide links to the review work I’ve done already.

  1. Hi Chris, Please let us know if you’d like any help getting Nexus set up (since it’s a client/server solution. We’d be happy to help you get up and running.

    • Hi Nick, I’m going to focus on apps that only require client side installs in the near term. I’ll look at options that need server side install later.

Hi Chris – If you haven’t seen it yet, I invite you to look at our Web Based Mobile SharePoint Solution http://www.mobileentree.com. You don’t need to worry about all the combinations of client apps for different devices. Mobile Entree provides rich access to SharePoint Content (Intranet or Internet) BI, workflow and much more out of the box. Equally important it extends SharePoint into a MEAP providing a rich API to build your own mobile applications – created in visual studio as a sharepoint feature. I would be more than happy to provide you with trial software to explore and answer any questions

    • Hi Lisa, I’ve seen Mobile Entree and it is something I’d like to look at in more detail in the future. I’d be looking at that separate to these clients though.

I used a couple of the ones you listed and throne I found to be more stable is Filamente iOS client.

  4. Hello Chris
I recommend that you have a look at KWizCom’s Mobile solution for SharePoint:
    http://www.kwizcom.com/sharepoint-add-ons/sharepoint-mobile-extensions/overview/

Unlike other client/server solutions that simply render SharePoint’s UI to smartphones, KWizCom’s solution does something else:
It enables you to create a custom mobile interface which is Task-oriented and context-sensitive.
This means that instead of just rendering SharePoint in smartphone-compatible UI, KWizCom’s solution enables you to create the exact interface your users require while they are on the road (Exact menus/buttons, exact form fields etc.). This answers the special requirements of mobile users (small screen, small touch keyboard, very limited time) – which make the SharePoint’s portal interface not adaquate for mobile users’ needs.

The solution is server-based, therefore requires zero client installation.
A free trail is available on KWizCom’s website.

    • Hi Nimrod,

Thanks for letting me know about those. My primary focus at this point in time is client side. I’ve got quite a bit to get through.

If and when I get time, I’ll look at server based solutions.

      Thanks,

      Chris

    Hello,

Do you have any info on when a SharePoint client for Windows 8 Metro is likely to arrive?

    Thanks

    Alan

    • Hi Alan,

Sorry, I don’t have any information. Like you, I’m watching this space and will cover it when anything is released.

Perhaps something may come out of the conference next week.
